It's an emerging short-term rental market sitting less than 90 minutes from Washington DC, with mountain views, Shenandoah Valley wineries, and Shenandoah National Park at its doorstep. When a property here tops a national Airbnb ranking, the real estate market is paying attention — and so am I.
The property: Airbnb released its annual most wishlisted listings across all 50 states, and Virginia's #1 spot went to Doah House — officially listed as the "Mountaintop Retreat with Wood-Fired Hot Tub" in Front Royal.
- Perched on a private 4-acre bluff atop Blue Mountain with sweeping Shenandoah Valley views
- Scandinavian-designed cabin with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, a rain shower, and heated Moroccan tile floors
- Private wood-fired hot tub surrounded by trees — nearly fully booked through summer
- A five-night stay runs approximately $1,780 (~$356/night) before taxes and fees
- Built over four years by owners Remo and Emi, in collaboration with architect Patrick Farley, with a deliberate focus on preserving the natural landscape
What makes this location work: I've spent a lot of time in this part of Virginia, and the location equation is hard to argue with.
- Mountain views right outside the door — the kind that actually make you stop talking mid-sentence
- Downtown Front Royal is just minutes away for dinner, coffee, or a walk through a genuine small-town main street
- Shenandoah Valley wineries are one of my personal favorites — an afternoon on the wine trail out here with ridgeline views is tough to beat
- Luray Caverns is about 45 minutes south — one of the best natural attractions on the East Coast
- Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive are 30 minutes away
- Washington DC is roughly 90 minutes — meaning NoVa professionals can leave after work Friday and be in a wood-fired hot tub before 8pm
What they're saying: Airbnb's annual wishlist rankings reflect traveler demand — properties people are saving, watching, and actively planning trips around. Virginia's top slot going to a mountain cabin in Front Royal, not Virginia Beach or the DC suburbs, is a meaningful data point about where discretionary travel dollars are flowing.
The real estate angle: This isn't just a travel story.
- Short-term rental demand in the Front Royal and Warren County corridor has grown steadily as remote work expanded the radius of where DC-area buyers are willing to invest

What I'm watching: Whether this kind of national visibility accelerates buyer interest in Warren and Fauquier County mountain properties the way similar stories have in other markets. The supply of well-located, acreage parcels with views is finite — and demand from the DC metro isn't going anywhere.
The bottom line: Virginia's most wishlisted Airbnb is 90 minutes from most of Northern Virginia. That's not a coincidence — it's the market telling you something. Front Royal and the Shenandoah Valley corridor are drawing serious attention from DC-area travelers and investors alike, and the properties that stand out on design and experience are the ones generating real returns.
My take: I've always believed the Front Royal and western Virginia corridor is underappreciated relative to what it offers. Mountain views, wineries, caverns, the Park — all within reach of the DC metro. As more NoVa buyers and investors discover what's out here, I expect the market to keep moving.
