Tesla Cybercabs are showing up all over Northern Virginia

Tesla’s futuristic gold Cybercab has been spotted in Tysons, Rosslyn, Arlington and on the Beltway — raising questions about whether Northern Virginia could be on the company’s robotaxi roadmap.

Driving the news: NBC Washington transportation reporter Adam Tuss posted video Thursday of a Tesla Cybercab driving through Tysons, saying the vehicle appeared to be “mapping” roads. A human driver was behind the wheel as backup.

It wasn't an isolated sighting. Keegan Bursaw photographed a Cybercab on I-495, David McGraw reported seeing one in Arlington, and D.C. reporter Martin Austermuhle photographed one in Rosslyn on Aug. 25. ARLnow independently reported the Rosslyn sighting the following morning.

Zoom out: Northern Virginia residents have been spotting the distinctive gold vehicles for months. A July r/nova post reported a Cybercab near Route 7 and Gallows Road in Tysons, with commenters reporting additional sightings in Falls Church and on I-495. This week, another r/nova thread drew hundreds of votes after a user said they had seen three of the vehicles around Tysons and Falls Church.

Why it matters: The sightings come as Tesla's robotaxi ambitions move from testing toward actual passenger service. Tesla says Cybercab rides are currently available to passengers in limited parts of Austin, Texas.

The production Cybercab is purpose-built for autonomy, with two seats and no steering wheel or pedals.

Tesla's broader Robotaxi network is already operating with autonomous vehicles in several U.S. cities, while Cybercab itself is currently available to passengers only in limited parts of Austin.

Reality check: Seeing Cybercabs mapping or testing Northern Virginia roads does not mean Tesla has announced robotaxi service for Tysons, Arlington or the D.C. region.

Tesla says it is preparing Robotaxi for additional U.S. metro areas, but Northern Virginia isn't currently listed as an active Cybercab market.

The intrigue: Northern Virginia would be an interesting proving ground. Between Tysons, Arlington, Dulles, Metro stations, I-66 and the Beltway, the region combines dense urban streets, highways, complicated intersections and heavy commuter traffic.

And Tesla isn't the only autonomous-vehicle company eyeing the region — making the question less about whether self-driving vehicles will become more common around Washington and more about when.

What we're watching: Whether these Cybercab sightings remain engineering and mapping tests — or become the first sign that the Washington region is being evaluated for a future Tesla Robotaxi launch.

For now, keep an eye out for the unmistakable gold two-seater.

Bottom line

Tesla hasn't announced Cybercab service in Northern Virginia. But with the vehicles now appearing repeatedly from Rosslyn to Tysons and along I-495, something is clearly being tested here.
