Why it matters:
Manassas is positioning itself for a major shift — from a regional airport to a potential commercial travel hub in Northern Virginia.

What’s happening:
Manassas City Council unanimously approved renaming Manassas Regional Airport to Washington Manassas Airport after weeks of public input.

  • The goal: increase visibility in the D.C. travel market
  • Commercial flights are expected to begin as early as next year
  • The airport is undergoing a $50 million expansion

The strategy:
Put simply — people search for “Washington” when booking flights.

  • Adding “Washington” to the name makes the airport more competitive online and in booking systems
  • It follows a proven model used by Washington Dulles International Airport, which added “Washington” in 1984

Between the lines:
This isn’t just branding — it’s about economic growth.

  • More flights = more visitors, jobs, and development
  • Positions Manassas as a third option in the region alongside Reagan and Dulles
  • Signals long-term confidence in Prince William County’s growth

What it costs:
Updating signage and materials will cost roughly $500,000, funded by the airport.

  • The name change still needs final updates through the FAA
  • That process is expected to take several weeks

A quick note:
The historic name Harry P. Davis Field will remain — only the airport branding is changing.

The bottom line:
A simple name change — but a strategic move to put Manassas on the map as commercial service takes off.
