A proposal that sounds almost unbelievable is gaining traction in Washington: an IndyCar street race on the National Mall.
According to reporting by the Washington Business Journal, the Trump administration is exploring plans to bring an IndyCar Grand Prix to the heart of Washington, D.C. as part of the nation’s 250th birthday celebration later this year.
What’s Being Proposed
Multiple reports say the race would be led by U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and staged as a one-day, high-profile event highlighting American motorsports, tourism, and national landmarks.
The proposed course would be unprecedented:
-
Starting near the Supreme Court
-
Looping around the National Mall
-
Passing the Lincoln Memorial
-
With pit row located alongside the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool
Organizers are reportedly targeting August 21 for the event.
If approved, it would be one of the most visually striking sporting events ever staged in the nation’s capital.
The Biggest Obstacle: Congress
The plan faces a major legal and political hurdle. Advertising is currently prohibited on U.S. Capitol grounds, and IndyCar vehicles are covered in sponsorship logos — a direct violation of existing rules.
Because of that, Congress would need to pass special legislation to allow the race to move forward.
Democrats in Congress have reportedly raised concerns about:
-
Traffic disruptions in downtown D.C.
-
Security demands on the U.S. Capitol Police
-
The strain such an event could place on federal land and infrastructure
There is also skepticism that lawmakers will prioritize approving the race amid ongoing disputes over health care subsidies and other legislative battles.
Why IndyCar Wants D.C.
IndyCar has made it clear that major East Coast markets are a top priority for the series.
In a statement to the Indianapolis Star, IndyCar said it continues to explore new marquee events and has long viewed Washington, D.C. — along with other large metro areas — as a potential host city. Last year, the series was already reported to be studying a possible street race somewhere in the D.C. region.
From a tourism and branding standpoint, the appeal is obvious.
In a statement shared with media outlets, the Department of Transportation called the race “an unprecedented opportunity” to showcase the National Mall, celebrate America’s racing heritage, and generate millions in tourism revenue for the District.
Historic Moment or Logistical Nightmare?
An IndyCar race weaving past monuments like the Lincoln Memorial would instantly become a global spectacle — part sporting event, part patriotic showcase.
But it would also bring intense scrutiny, road closures, security planning, and political debate to an already congested city.
Whether Congress ultimately signs off or not, the proposal highlights how aggressively D.C. is being positioned as a destination not just for politics, but for major international events.
For now, the idea remains just that — a proposal. But if it moves forward, it could redefine what’s possible on the National Mall.
