If you only do one thing, plan your visit around the "Christmas in Middleburg" festival, held on Saturday, December 6, 2025. This isn't just a small-town event; it's a nationally recognized celebration.

It kicks off on Saturday with the event that makes Middleburg truly unique:

  • The Middleburg Hunt & Hounds Review: This is the showstopper. Around 11 a.m., Washington Street (the main drag) falls silent. Then, you hear it—the cry of the huntsman's horn. Dozens of riders in formal "pinks" (the iconic red coats) on gleaming horses, accompanied by a full pack of hounds, parade down the street. It’s a jaw-dropping nod to the town's equestrian soul, and it feels like you've been transported back in time.

  • The Christmas Parade: Later in the afternoon, the town hosts a different kind of procession. This is the "people's parade," a heartwarming, two-mile-long event featuring vintage carriages, local floats, marching bands, and, of course, Santa Claus himself.

Local Tip: Get there early. I'm talking hours early. Traffic into the small town is intense, but the atmosphere of waiting with a hot coffee in hand is part of the fun.

CRITICAL UPDATE: Parking & Tickets

This is my most important piece of advice: This is not a "show up and find parking" event. To manage the crowds and preserve the town's charm, access on festival day requires a pre-purchased parking pass.

Do not try to visit on festival day without a pre-paid pass. You will be turned away. Plan ahead, get your ticket, and then relax and enjoy the magic.

✨ More Than a Parade: The Vibe is Everything

Even if you miss the main festival, the entire month is magical. The town is dressed in its holiday best—understated, elegant, and timeless. Think fresh pine garlands, classic red bows, and twinkling white lights.

Here’s what a perfect day in Middleburg looks like:

1. The Dickensian-Style Shopping

The boutiques in Middleburg are second to none. This isn't mall shopping; it's a curated experience.

  • For the Home: Stop by Crème de la Crème for beautiful European-style gifts and home goods.

  • For the Holidays: The Christmas Sleigh is a must-visit. It's a year-round German-inspired Christmas shop that feels extra special this time of year.

  • For the Connoisseur: Pop into The Fun Shop, a local institution since 1956, for unique gifts, and Highcliffe Clothiers for that classic hunt country style.

2. The Cozy Culinary Stops

The town is built for cozying up. When the air gets crisp, you have to...

  • Grab a Coffee: Start your day at King Street Coffee. The line might be long, but the vibe is worth it.

  • Have a Historic Lunch: Make a reservation at The Red Fox Inn & Tavern. As one of the oldest continuously operating inns in America, it's the definition of historic charm. Eating by one of their roaring fireplaces is a core Middleburg memory.

  • Enjoy a Warm Meal: Grab a gourmet sandwich at Market Salamander or a comforting bowl of soup at Common Grounds.

3. The World-Class Luxury

You can't talk about modern Middleburg without mentioning the Salamander Resort & Spa. Even if you're not staying there, it's worth a visit. The entire resort is spectacularly decorated, often featuring a life-sized gingerbread house, an outdoor ice skating rink, and thousands of lights. It's the perfect spot for a high-end holiday dinner or a festive cocktail.

My Final Take

As a storyteller and a local, what I love most about Middleburg at Christmas is its authenticity. It’s a town that understands its heritage and invites you to be a part of it. It’s a place that reminds you to slow down, to look up at the lights, to appreciate the history, and to connect with the people you’re with.

It's not just a backdrop for a photo; it's a genuine feeling. It’s the perfect place to make new memories while feeling connected to the past.
