Drivers who regularly travel between Loudoun County and Prince William County should plan ahead this week, as Auburn Farm Road (Route 3171) and Sanders Lane (Route 705) will be closed during daytime hours on Wednesday and Thursday, December 17 and 18.
The temporary closures are scheduled between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., weather permitting, to allow crews to install new guardrail on the bridge over Bull Run, which sits directly on the county line. During the closure window, through traffic will not be able to cross the bridge, though access to nearby homes and properties will remain available up to the active work zone.
Detour Route in Place
A signed detour will be in effect while work is underway. Drivers should expect to be rerouted using the following roads:
-
Route 234 (Sudley Road)
-
Gum Spring Road (Route 659)
-
Braddock Road (Route 620)
-
Northstar Boulevard (Route 3171)
Motorists are encouraged to follow posted detour signs and allow extra travel time, especially during late-morning and early-afternoon hours.
What Drivers Should Know
-
Plan alternate routes if possible
-
Expect increased traffic on surrounding roads
-
Work is weather-dependent and subject to change
-
Closures are limited to off-peak daytime hours to minimize commuter impact
The project is part of ongoing efforts to improve roadway safety and infrastructure in Northern Virginia. Drivers should stay alert, slow down near work zones, and remain patient as crews complete the necessary upgrades.
For real-time traffic conditions, detours, and roadway updates, motorists can use Virginia’s 511 traffic system via phone, website, or mobile app.
