According to the Washington Business Journal, Manassas-based startup Electra.aero has unveiled two futuristic commercial airliner concepts developed for NASA as part of a national effort to reimagine passenger aviation by 2050.
And while the aircraft themselves may still be years away, the economic impact for Prince William County could begin much sooner.
Most people think of Northern Virginia as the home of government contractors, data centers, and defense companies.
But one company in Manassas is quietly trying to change the future of commercial aviation.
Electra, headquartered at the Washington Manassas Regional Airport, introduced two airliner concepts through NASA’s Advanced Aircraft Concepts for Environmental Sustainability program, also known as AACES.
The program is focused on developing more fuel-efficient and sustainable aircraft for the future of commercial travel.
Manassas Is Competing on the National Stage
Electra recently revealed its concepts during the AIAA Aviation Forum in San Diego.
The designs were developed with major aviation partners, including American Airlines and Lockheed Martin.
NASA awarded approximately $11.5 million across five industry teams to explore what the next generation of commercial aircraft could look like.
Electra is competing directly against some of the biggest names in aerospace, including Boeing and Pratt & Whitney.
For a company headquartered in Manassas, that is a remarkable milestone.
Two Airliners Designed for the Future

Instead of designing another traditional tube-shaped airplane, Electra’s engineers developed what is known as a double-bubble fuselage.
The design creates additional lift while reducing drag, allowing the aircraft to fly more efficiently than today’s commercial jets.
The company introduced two concepts:
A 114-seat aircraft roughly comparable to today’s Airbus A220.
A 178-seat aircraft similar in size to the Boeing 737.
The aircraft also uses a hybrid-electric propulsion system that works differently than conventional jet engines.
Instead of engines providing only thrust, they also generate electricity that powers electric fans mounted near the rear of the aircraft.
According to Electra, the result could improve overall efficiency by approximately 17% compared to today’s commercial airliners.
Why Efficiency Matters
Airlines spend billions of dollars each year on fuel.
Even relatively small improvements in efficiency can translate into enormous savings over the life of an aircraft fleet.
Electra’s Director of Product Strategy, Parker Vascik, said the company is working to increase propulsive efficiency from the high-80% range into the mid-90% range.
That improvement does not just lower operating costs.
It could also reduce emissions while making commercial aviation more sustainable for decades to come.
This Is Not Just a Concept Company
Perhaps the most impressive part of the story is that Electra is not simply creating computer renderings.
The company is already building aircraft in Manassas.
Its flagship product, the EL9, is a nine-passenger hybrid-electric airplane designed to connect smaller regional airports with major metropolitan areas like Washington, D.C., and New York.
The goal is to make regional travel faster, more affordable, and significantly more efficient by allowing travelers to bypass congested hub airports.
According to the Washington Business Journal, Electra has already accumulated more than $10 billion in preorders from over 60 customers worldwide.
Production of the EL9 is expected to begin before the end of the decade.

Expansion Is Already Happening in Manassas
Electra is not slowing down.
The company started expanding its headquarters at the Washington Manassas Regional Airport in September.
For Northern Virginia residents, that is more than just another construction project.
Growing aerospace companies create high-paying engineering, manufacturing, software, and technical jobs.
Those employees eventually need homes.
They spend money locally.
They support restaurants, retail, schools, and surrounding businesses.
This is exactly the type of economic development that quietly strengthens a housing market over the long term.
Why This Matters for Prince William County Real Estate
When people think about what drives home values, they often focus on mortgage rates or inventory.
Those certainly matter.
But employment growth may be even more important over the long run.
Northern Virginia has consistently benefited from high-paying industries moving into the region.
Data centers fueled growth in Loudoun County.
Defense contractors helped transform Fairfax County.
Now advanced aviation companies like Electra could become another important piece of Prince William County’s economic future.
One company alone will not change the housing market overnight.
But sustained investment, expanding headquarters, manufacturing jobs, and billions of dollars in future aircraft production all contribute to the kind of long-term demand that supports local real estate.
It is one more reason investors, homeowners, and buyers should continue paying attention to what is happening in Manassas.
Northern Virginia Continues to Diversify
One of the biggest strengths of the Northern Virginia economy is that it is not dependent on a single industry.

Electra may still be years away from flying commercial passengers, but the company’s growth is already putting Manassas on the map in an entirely new way.
