How much does it cost to buy a home in Reston?

Median sales price in Reston runs around $650K, which is actually more affordable than some areas that are $800K-$900K. Why? Because you have so many housing options—townhomes, condos, high-rise condos, all different price points. Condos start at $300K-$400K, townhomes run $500K-$800K depending on location and updates, and waterfront properties like the Lake Thoreau listing we have goes for $1.3M. Keep in mind with luxury high-rise condos, you're looking at expensive HOA dues on top of the purchase price. But the value is there compared to Arlington or DC proper.

How does the Silver Line metro work in Reston?

Reston has two Silver Line stations: Reston Station and Wiehle-Reston East. The Silver Line connects you directly to Tysons, DC, Kennedy Center, Pentagon, Arlington—pretty much wherever you want. Metro ridership is setting records right now because of return-to-office mandates, so tons of people are using it daily. The stations have park-and-ride garages, bus connections via Fairfax Connector, and walkable access if you live nearby. You can literally live near Reston Town Center or Reston Station and never need a car. This is one of the few areas in Northern Virginia where that's actually true.

What companies are based in Reston?

Reston's a massive tech hub. You've got Google, Microsoft, Blue Origin (Jeff Bezos's space company), Leidos (huge government contractor), Fannie Mae, Volkswagen America, Kaiser Permanente, TransUnion, ICF, Bentley—the list goes on. There are thousands of tech jobs right here, plus you're close to data center alley in Ashburn with even more opportunities. A lot of Amazon HQ2 employees in Arlington actually live in Reston and commute via metro. This area is pulling jobs away from DC and Arlington because of the metro access combined with newer office space and amenities.

Is Reston really walkable?

Yes, legitimately. Reston Town Center and Lake Anne Plaza are two of the few truly walkable areas in all of Northern Virginia. You can walk to restaurants, shopping, movie theater, your job, the metro station, banks, pretty much anything. There are bike rental stations everywhere, buses run constantly, and the Silver Line connects everything. Compare that to Ashburn, Gainesville, Haymarket where you absolutely need a car—Reston's different. Arlington, Reston, Tysons are the walkable spots in Northern Virginia. If you lived near Reston Town Center or Reston Station, you genuinely wouldn't need a car for daily life.

What's Reston Town Center like?

Reston Town Center is where everyone hangs out—locals and people from all over Northern Virginia come here. You've got Founding Farmers, Morton's, Sweetgreen, Cinemark movie theater, tons of shops and restaurants. In winter they have an ice skating rink and giant chess set. In summer when it's not being used, they do concerts and events. There's always something happening—people out with their dogs, grabbing lunch, walking around. Security is pretty intense (they hate when I film), but that means it's super safe and well-maintained. The only complaints are stores close a bit early and security is sometimes over the top. But it's a legitimately cool spot.

What's Lake Anne Plaza and why is it special?

Lake Anne Plaza is the original Reston from the '60s—this is where Robert Simon's "city of the future" started with massive media fanfare. It's got this charming historic waterfront with cafes, Lake Anne Brew House, boat rentals for kayaks and paddleboards, outdoor seating right on the water. They do farmers markets and community events. The buildings are from the '60s but a lot of them have been updated with modern interiors—open lofts, contemporary finishes. It's got that tight-knit community vibe where you actually know your neighbors. Even if you don't live in Reston, you'd want to check out Lake Anne Plaza—it's genuinely special and doesn't feel like typical Northern Virginia.

Is Reston good for families?

Absolutely. You've got Reston Hospital Center with full medical care, tons of schools throughout the area, parks and green space everywhere since Reston prioritized that from day one. There are biking trails, pickleball courts, pools, tot lots, multiple lakes for outdoor recreation. The walkability and safety are huge for families—kids can actually get around without parents driving them everywhere. The community vibe is strong, especially around Lake Anne Plaza. And you're close to Fair Lakes for shopping, Tysons for bigger stuff, but Reston itself has everything you need daily. It's one of the more family-friendly spots in Northern Virginia for sure.

What's the commute like from Reston?

The Silver Line metro makes commuting ridiculously convenient. You can ride directly to Tysons, Arlington, Pentagon, DC without dealing with traffic. A lot of people who work at Amazon HQ2 in Arlington live in Reston because the metro connection is so good. You're also close to Dulles Airport and right off Dulles Toll Road 267, so driving access is solid too. If you're working at Google, Microsoft, or any of the tech companies based right here in Reston, you can literally walk or bike to work. The return-to-office mandates have Metro setting ridership records, so public transit is legitimately packed and useful again.

How does Reston compare to other Northern Virginia areas?

Reston's unique because it combines walkability, metro access, and tech jobs all in one spot. You're not getting that in Ashburn, Gainesville, or Haymarket—those areas require a car for everything. Compared to Arlington or Alexandria, Reston is more affordable with way more housing options and newer construction. The median around $650K gets you more than you'd get closer in. McLean and Tysons are ultra-expensive—multi-million for single families. Reston gives you the convenience and walkability of Arlington without paying Arlington prices. If you want newer construction, Ashburn to Gainesville has that, but you lose the walkability and metro access. Reston balances all of it better than most places in Northern Virginia.
