There are holiday traditions in the DC area that feel like they anchor the whole season — and ZooLights at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo is one of them. If you grew up here or have lived in Northern Virginia long enough, you know exactly what I mean. It’s one of those rare events that brings everyone together: families, couples, out-of-town visitors, and anyone who just needs a night where the world feels a little more magical.

And after a fall full of uncertainty with the federal government shutdown, ZooLights is officially returning — and the timing couldn’t be better.

A Perfectly Timed Comeback

As soon as the Smithsonian announced it was reopening its museums and venues, the big question everyone had was: Will ZooLights happen this year?

The answer is yes — and it’s happening November 21 through January 3, 2026.

If you’ve never been, imagine the entire National Zoo transformed by more than a million lights, glowing sculptures, themed pathways, and the kind of atmosphere that feels like a mini-vacation from the usual Northern Virginia and DC grind.

Even though the live animal exhibits aren’t open at night, there’s so much happening across the grounds that you almost forget you're walking through a working zoo.

ZooLights 2025–2026 Schedule

  • Monday–Saturday: 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

  • Sunday: 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

  • General Admission Tickets: $9 (ages 2+)

  • Parking: $30

  • Date Night (21+ on December 17): $19

Tickets officially go on sale Saturday, November 15 — and if you’ve been in the DC area long enough, you know you shouldn’t wait until December to grab them.

What Makes ZooLights Worth the Trip

Here’s my honest take: ZooLights feels different from other holiday light shows because it blends the scale of a major public event with that cozy, festive vibe you usually only get at smaller local celebrations.

You get:

  • Huge glowing animal lanterns designed to mimic wildlife and habitats

  • Dozens of custom light displays across the park

  • Live performances from local music groups

  • The classic carousel

  • Hot chocolate, seasonal snacks, and winter-themed treats available for purchase

  • A brand-new adventure maze that’s perfect for kids — and honestly, adults too

It’s the kind of outing where you can take your time, wander, grab a treat, take a million pictures, and just enjoy being outside in the crisp evening air.

Two Special Nights to Keep an Eye On

Member Nights

December 9–11
Zoo members get free entry and some extra perks, including complimentary treats. These nights are usually less crowded, which makes the whole experience even better.

Date Night

December 17
This is a 21+ event where adults can enjoy ZooLights without the kid-focused pace. You get the same lights and attractions, just with a calmer atmosphere. It’s a great option for couples looking for something different than the usual dinner-and-a-movie night.
