From vampire symphonies to waterfront trick-or-treating, here's your guide to the best fall happenings around D.C. and Northern Virginia.

Fall in Northern Virginia hits differently. The air's crisp, the nights are longer, and suddenly everyone's into spooky golf and outdoor movie screenings. If you're wondering how to make the most of October without scrolling endlessly through event pages, I've done the work for you. Here are five events I'm genuinely excited about this month — the kind that make for great weekends and even better content.

PUTT in the Park

CityCenterDC is running through November 2, and it's become my go-to recommendation for anyone looking for a low-pressure outing. Six holes of mini golf tucked between shops and restaurants at 10th and H Streets NW — it's ten bucks per round, and honestly perfect for a lunch break reset or a casual date that doesn't require a full dinner commitment. Pro tip: hit it up on weekdays after 5 PM if you want to avoid the crowds. The vibe is relaxed, the backdrop is pure downtown energy, and if you catch me there with a PSL in hand, mind your business.

HARBOR HALLOWEEN

If you've got kids, pets, or just love a good costume contest, Harbor Halloween at National Harbor is calling your name. This is the full fall experience rolled into one waterfront location — trick-or-treating, a Pet Pawrade where dogs absolutely steal the show, outdoor movies at sunset, and costume competitions that get surprisingly competitive. It's all free, which is rare these days. Saturday afternoons are ideal if you want that family-friendly energy and golden hour photo ops by the water. Trust me, your Instagram will thank you.

Haunted Mini Golf

Now, if you're more into adrenaline than wholesome family vibes, Haunted Mini Golf at Pohick Bay Regional Park is happening October 24 and 25 from 6 to 9 PM. We're talking eighteen holes transformed with spooky lighting, fog machines, and actors who will absolutely jump out at you mid-putt. It's at 6503 Pohick Bay Drive in Lorton, tickets start at ten bucks, and here's an insider tip: bring a flashlight because the 16th hole gets genuinely dark. I might show up in full vampire mode just to commit to the aesthetic.

Twilight Concert

For something a little more theatrical and nostalgic, Twilight in Concert is happening at The National Theatre on October 24 and 25 at 7:30 PM. Picture this: the original Twilight film on screen while a live twelve-piece orchestra performs the entire iconic soundtrack. It's at 1321 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, tickets start at $83.45, and yes, people do show up in vampire-inspired attire. If you hear me humming "Supermassive Black Hole" on repeat after this — no you didn't.

Movie in the Park: Hocus Pocus

And finally, let's talk about the most charming event on this list: Movie in the Park: Hocus Pocus at River Mill Park in Occoquan on October 25 at 7 PM. There's something magical about watching the Sanderson Sisters on a big outdoor screen in a historic district as the temperature drops and the stars come out. It's at 407 Mill Street, admission is just five bucks, and it benefits local charities. Bring chairs, blankets, and maybe an extra layer — the waterfront gets chilly after sunset, but that's half the charm. This is small-town Virginia at its absolute best.

If you’ve ever dreamed about living somewhere that captures this same cozy, small-town energy year-round, you’ll fall in love with Occoquan’s waterfront streets, boutique shops, and historic homes.
