Every December, Northern Virginia transforms into one of the most festive regions in the country. Historic streets fill with marching bagpipes, horse-drawn carriages clip-clop down small-town roads, and beloved local traditions attract tens of thousands of families.

This guide brings together the four biggest and most iconic holiday parades in the region — each offering a totally different vibe, from waterfront charm to equestrian grandeur.

Whether you're visiting from out of town or looking to build new family traditions, these are the holiday events you absolutely can’t miss.

1. Alexandria Scottish Christmas Walk Parade

Date: Saturday, December 6, 2025 — 11 a.m.
Location: Old Town Alexandria

Official Website: https://visitalexandria.com/holidays/scottish-walk/

Few holiday celebrations in the country feel as unique as Alexandria’s Scottish Christmas Walk. This Old Town tradition brings together Scottish clans in full tartan, authentic pipe-and-drum bands, dozens of terriers and hounds, and the historic streetscape of Alexandria as the backdrop.

The parade winds through Old Town’s charming rowhomes, waterfront blocks, and cobblestone lanes. It’s one of the longest-running parades in the region and consistently ranked among the best holiday events in the Mid-Atlantic.

Insider tip: Take Metro or rideshare — Old Town parking fills up fast.

2. Greater Manassas Christmas Parade

Date: Saturday, December 6, 2025 — 10 a.m.
Location: Historic Downtown Manassas
Official Website: https://gmchristmasparade.org/

This is one of Northern Virginia’s largest community parades, drawing big crowds to the historic Manassas district every December. Expect creative floats, local marching bands, civic groups, dance troupes, and the parade finale: Santa rolling through downtown before the nighttime tree-lighting celebration.

The Manassas parade has run for more than 75 years and is a cornerstone of the city’s holiday season.

Insider tip: Plan brunch before or after — downtown Manassas restaurants are packed with parade-goers.

3. Reston Town Center Holiday Parade & Tree Lighting

Date: Thursday, November 28, 2025 — 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Location: Reston Town Center
Official Website: https://restontc.org/event/holiday-parade-and-events/

Ranked one of the top holiday parades in the country, Reston’s celebration is a full-day experience. The parade kicks off the festive season with giant balloons, dance groups, marching bands, and signature Reston horse-drawn carriage rides.

After the parade, families stay for ice skating, live entertainment, shopping, train rides, and the highly anticipated tree-lighting ceremony at dusk.

Insider tip: Make a dinner reservation at one of the restaurants facing Market Street — the atmosphere is unbeatable.

4. Christmas in Middleburg

Date: Saturday, December 6, 2025 — events throughout the day, parade at 2 p.m.
Location: Washington Street, Middleburg, VA
Official Website: https://christmasinmiddleburg.org/

If there’s only one holiday event you attend this season, Middleburg might be it.

The morning begins with the famous Hunt Review, where horses, hounds, riders, and red-coated huntsmen trot through the village. Later, Washington Street transforms into a spectacular display of over 500 animals, carriages, classic cars, local businesses, and holiday performers.

Middleburg’s parade is where small-town charm meets Virginia’s equestrian heritage — all set in one of the most beautiful historic villages on the East Coast.

Insider tip: Arrive extremely early or take shuttle buses; parking is limited and crowds are huge.
