Old Town Alexandria Is Getting a New Specialty Coffee Shop
Old Town Alexandria’s King Street is about to welcome a new destination for coffee lovers.
According to Alexandria Living Magazine, Mudhouse Coffee Roasters is preparing to open its first Alexandria café at 1119 King Street, with a public opening expected on July 30 or July 31, 2026.
The Charlottesville-born specialty coffee company has grown from a small coffee cart into an award-winning Virginia roaster with locations across Virginia and South Carolina. Its arrival in Alexandria will bring locally roasted coffee, a thoughtfully designed gathering space and a unique connection to the farms where some of its beans are grown.
A Virginia Coffee Company With Global Roots
Mudhouse Coffee was founded by John and Lynelle Lawrence, who began the business with a coffee cart in 1993.
Today, the company operates cafés, a Charlottesville roasting facility and its own experimental coffee farm, Finca La Cabra, located on the slopes of Volcán Barú in Panama.
Some of the beans served at Mudhouse come directly from the company’s farm, while others are sourced through relationships with coffee growers around the world. The beans are roasted in Charlottesville before being delivered to Alexandria and ground fresh at the café.
That farm-to-cup connection should help Mudhouse stand out in Old Town’s already competitive food and beverage scene.
A Coffee Shop Designed for Conversation
The new café will offer seating for approximately 40 customers across two distinctly designed spaces.
The front area will have a tea-house-inspired atmosphere featuring hand-painted Japanese china dating back to the 1930s.
The second room, known as The Chambers, will take a very different approach.
The space will be intentionally phone-free and designed without electrical outlets. With couches, a signature blue wall and no easy place to plug in a laptop, the room is meant to encourage customers to read, relax and have conversations without constant digital distractions.
In a world where many coffee shops double as crowded offices, The Chambers could become one of the most interesting features of the new location.
What Will Be on the Menu?
Mudhouse plans to open with a full selection of coffee and specialty drinks.
The team is also developing an exclusive drink for the Alexandria location, which may feature a raspberry and basil flavor combination.
Food will not be available immediately when the café opens. Mudhouse is still hiring and expects to add its planned food program once the Alexandria team is fully staffed.
Future menu options are expected to include baked goods, biscuits and cookies made on-site.
Live music may also be added in the coming months, giving customers another reason to visit the King Street café beyond their morning coffee run.

The opening of Mudhouse Coffee adds another independent Virginia business to one of Northern Virginia’s most recognizable commercial districts.
Old Town Alexandria already attracts residents and visitors with its historic architecture, waterfront, restaurants, boutiques and walkable streets. A coffee shop offering farm-connected beans, creative drinks and a phone-free gathering room feels like a natural fit for the neighborhood.
The café will first hold a soft opening for nearby businesses on Thursday, July 23, before welcoming the general public the following week.
Whether you are looking for a quick espresso, a comfortable place to read or a screen-free conversation with friends, Mudhouse Coffee could quickly become one of Old Town Alexandria’s most distinctive new gathering places.
